Born to a poor Greek immigrant family, Manny has hope that one day, he can escape his laborious and violent home to find happiness and freedom in the world. He runs away at the age of twelve, joining the Merchant Marines, and begins a long and lonely journey across the globe. Manny grows into the man he never dreamt he would be and transforms into the man God always knew he would become. Hope is my Anchor is Anna Broome’s fictional debut and is based on the true life story of her father. Manny’s life is full of the struggles that all humans face – physically, emotionally, and spiritually – as they strive to find true happiness. It relays the important message that hope in God, not things of this world, is truly the only thing we need to fulfill us.
