Honey from Crete: Simply the best!

I knew the honey on the island of Crete was delicious, but I didn't realize just how spectacular it was until I did a little research. Every time I visit, I load up my suitcase and bring some back because it just simply tastes so much better than the honey I find here in Michigan.

So here is what I found out...

Honey from Crete is considered to be of exceptionally high quality because:

Biodiversity: Crete is the largest Greek island and has a super rich and diverse landscape which means a wide variety of flora. Because of that, the bees have access to a wide range of nectar sources, so you find honey with unique flavors.

Climate: Crete has mild winters and warm, dry summers, which means a longer flowering season. Bees have more opportunities to collect nectar from different plants throughout the year.

Indigenous Flora: Crete has numerous indigenous plant species. Some are not found anywhere else in the world, and that contributes to the distinct flavors and aromas of Cretan honey. Crete is known for producing unique honey varieties, such as thyme honey and pine honey, which have distinct flavors and aromas.

Traditional Beekeeping Methods/Practices: Many beekeepers in Crete have significant expertise and continue to use traditional beekeeping methods following age-old practices. One of these is moving their hives to different locations to follow the bloom of specific plants. That helps maintain the purity and quality of the honey and ensures that the honey they produce captures the essence of the local flora

Everyone knows that Greek food, especially pastries, uses a fair amount of honey, but I also use it as a natural sweetener in plenty of American recipes, especially when I am looking for a healthier alternative to cane sugar or artificial sweeteners.
